Headaches and Pregnancy

Headaches occurring during pregnancy are a special problem. Fortunately, many women notice a reduction in their headaches as their pregnancy progresses, especially after the first trimester. Others will notice a worsening.

Worsening of headaches during pregnancy needs to be carefully evaluated by your healthcare professional. Needless to say, it is important to avoid any unnecessary pain medications during pregnancy. Your obstetrician can guide you on what agents are safe to use.

Sudden worsening of headaches, particularly later in pregnancy absolutely need to be evaluated.

Although certain medications are considered relatively safe in pregnancy, don’t forget that non-medicinal approaches can be used. These include relaxation exercises, the use of hot packs and cold packs and physical therapy.
